CONT CONT AMENDED RECORDS: CONT CONT An asterisk (*) next to an index entry indicates that the record is in the volumes of amended records. "Amended" records for years prior to 1901 were recently released on microfilm and are being incrementally added to the database. CONT CONT Amended records for years 1901 and later are held by the Registry of Vital Records and must be requested from that office. "Amended” records are records that were submitted after the initial release of records by the towns to the state or records that were recalled for correction, sometimes known as “late returns.” These records are either additions to an earlier year’s report, corrections to a previously entered record, or records of illegitimate births. CONT CONT The Mass. Registry of Vital Records and Statistics has released the pre-1901 “amended” records in amended volumes v.1 – v.42 to the Mass. Archives, and we are in the process of adding them to our website. Amended volumes 43 and up, and records later than 1900 in volumes v.1 – v.42 are not available for public viewing. Bowie, Maryland, 1991) Repository: #R12 Page: 221-222 Data: Text: A moderate amount of information may be applied to the adult life of Ellen Maria Fowle, Henry's last daughter. She was four weeks shy of her twenty-fourth birthday the evening of October 2, 1842, when she married Joseph Richards, Boston sailmaker, in the Purchase st. (Unitarian) Church. The Rev. James I. T. Coolidge, George Ripley's successor at Purchase st., performed the ceremony. The bridegroom --- seven years or so older than his wife --- must have seemed like something of an exotic to his in-law; for his late father Peter Richards also a sailmaker, had been born and raised in St. Thomas, the West Indies. (His mother, Mary, was born, more prosaically, in Westminster, near Fitchburg.) That Joseph and Ellen's married life had its precarious moments is suggested by the fifteen different Boston addresses at which they resided between 1842 and 1870. (For the last ten of those years they were residents of South Boston --- a neighborhood where, up until then, none of Henry Fowle's people had lived.) Nevertheless the Richardses raised a family. They had four known sons: Frank A., George C., Eugene F., and Walter P. All four lived to adulthood, and Frank and Eugene are known to have married. Frank and Walter both became machinists, and in fact trained with their machinist uncle Joseph Fowle. (in the 1870 federal census, Frank described himself as a pianoforte machinist.) George was a housepainter and Eugene, variously, a carpenter and packer. CONT CONT Ellen (Fowle) Richards lived just long enough to be counted in the census of 1870. She died of breast cancer on August 17, at the age of 51. Joseph her husband survived until 1876.
