Angelina (Richards) Nicholas lived in Rangiora, Canterbury, New Zealand.

Angelina was born about 1841. She was the daughter of Thomas Richards and Susanna Crowle. She was baptised on 22 May 1841 at Camborne, Cornwall, England. [1] Note: Angelina was recorded as being 6 mths old in the 1841 census, taken 6 June 1841, so she was probably born in December 1840 (need to view image to see this, "FindMyPast" $)

Angelina lived with her parents at Camborne, Cornwall, England.

Her father died in 1850. In the England and Wales Census of 1851 she was recorded in the household of her uncle Henry Crowle at Cross, Camborne, Redruth, Cornwall, England. She was aged 11, and working as an Iron Ore Dresser. Also in the household was her widowed mother Susan (aged 33) and her five siblings Susan Jane (aged 12), Amelia (8), Ellen (7), Triphena (3) and Thomas (just an infant).

She and her family were still living with her uncle Henry Crowle in 1861.

Angelina emigrated from England to New Zealand where she married Henry Adolphus Hodge in 1863. [2]

They had at least five children:

  1. Elizabeth (b. 1864)
  2. William Thomas (b. 1865)
  3. Adolphus Henry Springall (b. 1867, d. 1951)
  4. Trephina Lucretia (b. 1869)
  5. Edwin Thomas (b. 1870)

Her husband died in 1874.

Angelina married, secondly, Thomas Dennis Nicholas in 1887. They appear to have had no children together.

In the NZ Electoral Rolls of 1890 her husband Thomas was recorded at Rangiora, Canterbury, employed as a Labourer. It can be assumed that Angelina was with him. Women were not given the right to vote in New Zealand until 1893.

Angelina enrolled to vote in the 1896 General Elections, but sadly she passed away in 1894 at the age of about 53 before she was able to do so. Her name still appeared on the Electoral Rolls of 1896, in Rangiora, Canterbury.

She passed away about 1894.
