1.1.1.1.1. John Richardson (1810-1841)

John was born 9 October 1810 and baptized 14 April 1811 in Bywell Saint Andrew, a son of George Richardson and Ann Tailford. ^[1] He is one of two John Richardson's born near Hexhan, Northumberland, consistent with the 1841 census. ^[2] The other was John Richardson born 4 March 1811 and baptized 30 June 1811 in Bywell Saint Peter with father George Richardson and mother Ann Robson. ^[3] The John born 9 October 1810 and son of Ann Tailford is considered the father of Thomas William based on the record of the subsequent birth to Ann Tailford of son James in Broomsbaugh, where Ann's parents lived and which is a tiny hamlet adjacent to Riding Mill, where Thomas William was born. In addition, the John that was a son of Ann Robson was, in 1851, unmarried and living with his parents in Broomley, according to the 1851 census, ^[4] and is thus excluded. (Broomley is a tiny community about 1 mile southwest of Bywell St. Peter and about 1.5 miles southeast of Riding Mill.)

1.1.1.1.2 Elizabeth Green (?-between 1838 and 1846)

Nothing is known of the birth date, place or parents of Elizabeth, and her identity, beyond her name, could not be determined. There were numerous Elizabeth Green births in the general area around Hexham but no basis for determining which, if any, was the mother of Thomas William.

1.1.1.1.3. Family

John Richardson and Elizabeth Green are assumed to have married by 1835, when their first known child was born, but their is no proof that they were ever married. No record or other information was found of such a marriage in 1825-1845 in the Hexham area. They are established as the parents of Thomas William by his death record. ^[5]

There is also uncertainty about the identity of Eliz, age 30 in the 1841 census. Two alternatives as to her identity are examined; (a) Elizabeth Green, the mother of Thomas William and about whom nothing else definitive is known; and (b) Elizabeth Richardson, daughter of Mary Richardson (the Mary, age 76, in the 1841 census).

An Elizabeth Green died January-March 1838 in Hexham, ^[6] and on the assumption that she and John were not married she might have been the mother of Thomas William and the Eliz in the 1841 census, but this can only be speculated. There are also records of death in the Hexham area of Elizabeth Richardson in January-March 1845 and in October-December 1846, ^[7] and either of them might have been the Eliz in the 1841 census.

In alternative (b) Elizabeth Richardson was born 15 January 1809 and baptized 3 April 1809 in Bywell St. Andrew, Northumberland, a daughter of William Richardson and Mary Green.^[8] She married Matthew Robson 2 June 1842 in Hexham^[9] and is listed as his wife, age 42, with son Thos Richardson, age 16, both born in Bywell St Andrew, in the 1851 census of Riding Mill. ^[10] This could reflect the adoption of Thomas, apparently an orphan then, by Matthew and Elizabeth or simply the recording practice of the census taker. Although the birth date is not an exact match with the 1841 census age, it is considered close enough. John, age 4, in 1841 was probably the brother of Thomas William, but nothing more is known of him. There is no record of the birth of a son John to William and Mary, and the relationship, if any, between John (age 30 in 1841) and Mary is unknown.

Neither John nor his parents could be found in the 1851 or 1861 censuses, and no subsequent census or other records connecting him to Elizabeth or sons Thomas or John were found. This suggests that John died between 1841 and 1851. He was probably the John Richardson that died in July-September 1841 in Hexham. ^[11] A copy of his death certificate could be purchased through ancestry.com for $38 and might confirm this.

John and Elizabeth had two children: Thomas William (see Biography in Profile of Thomas William Richardson (1835-1925)) and John, born about 1837. ^[12]
