This profile is showing conflated information for the children. Some online trees show John remarried Temperance in 1761, this seems to be based on a Barbour record in Scotland, Connecticut that shows both a John[1]
and a Temperance Richardson[2] joining a church in that town. This was likely a different John, and he could not have been married to Martha Holt in Windham at the same time. Further, the same record shows only a daughter Martha[3], born in Connecticut several years after John relocated his family to Yarmouth. Most of the children's names here do appear in Brown's Yarmouth Herald genealogies[4], but
Phebe was born in 1693, the grand-daughter of Thomas[4]
Amos does not appear in Nova Scotia or NB records
John Richardson's parents are not clear. The suffix "Jr" could indicate his father was John Richardson, or that he had an older uncle or cousin bearing the same name. Torry lists 35 marriages before 1700 of persons of that name in New England. Different online trees give him different parents, all without sources, and he does not appear in the Richardson Memorial[6] . In his series New Englanders in Nova Scotia"[7], Crowell gives John Richardson a Massachusetts lineage, but the rest of the information refers to a man who wasn't born until 1761, and was far too young to have been the original granteee. Undoubtedly there was more than one John Richardson in Yarmouth over the generations.
Factual information
On January 1, 1754, John Richardson Jr. married Martha Holt in Windham Connecticut[8]. She was the daughter of Robert and Rebecca (Preston) Holt[9]
Their children included:
Reuben, born December 7, 1754[10][11][9], who married Mary Burgess in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia[4]
Stephen, born September 25, 1759 [13], who may have married Mary Ann Marple in New Brunswick[14]
Martha (Holt) Richardson died October 4, 1759 [15]
In 1762, John Richardson emigrated to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia [16][17][18] with 2 boys and a girl.
In 1774 he purchased land from John MacKinnon in Chebogue[17], by 1776 he relocated to St. John's River, in what is now New Brunswick. The New Brunswick records show several land petitions for John Richardson[19], but the microfilms need to be accessed at the archives to determine which ones refer to this John Richardson, and which ones are for the John Richardson born 1710 in Yorkshire, England, (died 11 Jan 1789 at Windsor, NS, who came to NB in 1774 and settled at Sackville in Westmorland County); or another man of the same name.
There may also be probate documents in the archives at Fredericton.
