Biography

John A. Richardson was born about 1833 in Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut.[1]

He married in 1857, a year after his mother's passing, Mary E. Irwin of New Milford, Connecticut. He met her there while working as a bookkeeper. John and Mary had one child, Caroline, probably named after John's mother. John and family moved to New Haven, Connecticut around the middle of the 1860's. He held many positions in banking, business, and politics and served on several boards.[2]

John died April 12, 1902 in New Haven, Connecticut and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven, Connecticut.[3]

John A. Richardson, for 31 years the cashier of the Yale National Bank, at the corner of State and Chapel Streets, fainted in his chair in the dress circle of the Hyperion Theater, yesterday afternoon during the first act of the musical comedy, "Floradora," and was carried, pulseless, to the foyer from where he was removed an hour and a half later to his home, No. 87 Dwight Street, where he passed away at 5 o'clock. Apoplexy was the cause of death. At his death-bed were Mrs. Richardson and her daughter, Caroline, who had sat beside him at the theater, and General Samuel E. Merwin, president of the Yale National Bank, who arrived at the side of the stricken man but a few moments before Mr. Richardson expired. The deceased cashier was 69 years of age and is survived by only his grieved wife and daughter. His tragic end was soon told of throughout the center of the city, but to his most intimate business friends the news came as no great surprise. During the last three years the veteran bank man has been frequently as sufferer from periodical attacks of heart failure, and of late he has been under the regular care of his family physician. The funeral arrangements are not yet completed.[4]
