Gilbert Richardson was born about 1809 in Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut[1][2] to William and Esther (Barnes) Richardson. We may surmise that his birth was between June 11, 1809 and September 23, 1809 and since he is 41 on the 1850 census (taken September 23, 1850) but only 50 on the 1860 census (taken June 11, 1860).[3][4] He may have received his name from Content Gilbert. This is a possible grandmother for Gilbert.
The 1820 U.S. federal census entry for the household of William Richardson includes a male between ten and sixteen years of age. Gilbert would have been either ten or eleven years old when the census was taken. Gilbert's older brother, Hiram, died in 1818 and is therefore not listed.
He married Caroline Dibble on December 2, 1830 in Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut.[5][6] The children of this marriage were:
The 1840 United States census lists the family as one male between the ages of 5 and 10 (John, age 7), one male between 30 and 40 (Gilbert, age 31), one female under 5 (Mary, one female between 5 and 10 (Julia, age 5), age 6), and one female between 20 and 30 (Caroline, age 29).
Gilbert sold a piece of land to Charles Barns in 1844. This may be a relative of his mother, Esther (Barnes) Richardson.
The 1850 United States census shows a household of eleven individuals: Gilbert (age 41), Caroline (age 39), John (age 17), Julia (age 15), Mary (age 12), Miles (age 7), William Richardson (age 28), Charles Moses (age 21), Lyman Waldo (age 22), Amos Marvin (age 17), and Henry Small (age 22). Gilbert and his son, John, were listed as carpenters, as were William Richardson (Gilbert's younger brother) and the non-Richardson men.[7] In a book on the History of Canaan he is noted as a moderately successful businessman and had some kind of carpentry shop.
Gilbert moved his family sometime after 1850, probably after the death of his daughter, Mary, from typhoid fever in 1855. He shows up in the 1860 United States census in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut with a new wife (Caroline died in 1857). The members of the household included Gilbert (age 50), Rhoda A. (age 36), Miles (age 17), Charles E. Wellman (age 12), and Emily E. Wellman (age 8).[8] The two Wellman children must be related to Rhoda since her maiden name was Wellman. Gilbert is now listed as a house painter and Miles is shown as an apprentice house painter.
By 1870, he had added two children to his household, Ida Richardson (age 4) and Willie Richardson (age 8).[9] It is assumed that these are the children of Gilbert and Rhoda. A record of their marriage has not yet been found.
Gilbert Richardson died on May 10, 1879 in Guilford, Hartford County, Connecticut.[10] He is buried in the West Side Cemetery, Guilford, Connecticut, alongside his first wife, Caroline.[11][12][13][14]
