Biography

Rebecca was born to John Richmond and Elizabeth Irish in Kingston, Rhode Island.

Note: Her parentage is different from Lorissa Steele's conclusion in 1912 that Rebecca was the daughter of Jonathan Thurston. The current consensus is that these are two different Rebeccas [1]. (See Notes at the end of this profile)

Note: There do not appear to be any primary records for her mother Elizabeth’s surname. In the secondary literature, Elizabeth’s surname is not given by Joshua Bailey Richmond (1897) while Nellie Ward Johnson (1937) identifies her as Elizabeth Davis. Some current researchers identify her as Elizabeth Irish but never offer any documentary evidence. Therefore, the connections to Elizabeth Davis and Elizabeth Irish have been broken until someone provides documentary proof.

In 1720, Rebecca married Peter Worden in Westerly Rhode Island. They had at least ten children.

In 1745, Peter passed away at age 48 in Westerly. On 26 April 1753, widow Rebecca asked the Westerly council to appoint a committee to lay out her dower in the farm at her charge. Five years later, they gave her 49 acres.

From lthome reference

Name: Rebecca Richmond Born: Abt 1699 Westerly, Washington Co., RI Gender: Female Notes: From: Marva Rydalch !See notes for her husband and her father. "A Computer Generated Ancestor Chart..." found in "Wordens Past" V. XIV, No. 2 pg 977, has her as Rebecca Richmond, born 23 May 1689, Kingston, Washington, R.I., daughter of John and Elizabeth Richmond. However, if she were born in 1689 she would be 8 years older than her husband and 48 years old when her last child was born. The birth is not in Kingstown records in Arnold's "Vital Records of R. I.".

The Salt Lake Family History Library's Ancestral File has two Rebecca Richmonds, daughter of John and Abigail, one born 23 May 1689, Kingston, Washington, R.I., the other born abt 1699, Kingston, both married 26 May 1720 to Peter Worden, place given on the first one as Westerly, ordinance dates same for both. It gives no death.

"R. I. Gen. Reg.", published quarterly by the R. I. Families Association, has an abstract of a Hopkinton 1756 deed from Rebecca Worden of Westerly, widow of Peter, selling her right of dower to Lawton Palmer of Stonington, Conn. Witnesses are John Foster and Stephen Richmond. In Vol. 7 pg 307 is an abstract of the 1740 will of John Richmond naming Rebeckah Worden one of his daughters. It is from Vol. 6 pg 316 of Westerly Town Council and Probate Records.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Rebecca by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Rebecca:

From the lthome website Rebecca Richmond has been assigned a birth year of 1699 replacing the former birth year of 1689. Also the lthome reference refers to Rebecca's mother as Elizbeth Irish. Changes have been made to Wikitree reflecting this source.

Normally women are a few years younger than their husbands. In this case, however, Rebecca is eleven years older than Peter. Also, according to these dates, she was 31 when she got married, and her last three children were born when she was 48, 49, and 50. All of this makes me doubt the accuracy of her birth date.

Suspect this is Rebecca Richmond [1689-1776], eldest daughter of John Richmond and Elizabeth Irish. That Rebecca Richmond married Peter Worden IV on 26 May 1720 in Westerly, RI. If same person, there are about nine siblings, and 14 children! this makes sense since informant is a Dodge and my Worden ancestor is Bathsheba Dodge.

Rebecca's father, John Richmond, mentions her in his will as Rebecca Worden. Also, one of her and Peter's grandsons was named Richmond Worden.

There seems to be a question as to whether Peter IV's wife was Rebecca Richmond or Rebecca Thurston. As yet, I am unable to find reliable sourcing to confirm either.

Rebecca Richmond's father would be John Richmond (1660-1740); mother Elizabeth Irish (1674-1740).

Perhaps Wordens Past might be able to shed some light on this.
