Biography

There is no record of Margaret's birth however both Census and death records suggest it was about 1792. She was the daughter of Matthew Richmond and Christian Spiers. Her siblings were born at Dykefield Farm, Mauchline, Ayrshire however the 1851 and 1861 Census both indicate Margaret was born in Sorn, Ayrshire. This would not be unusual as it was often the custom for the mother to return to her parents' home for the birth of her first child.

Margaret married James Morton at Mauchline, Ayrshire on 8th August 1823. [1]They were married again in Auchinleck, Ayrshire on 29th August 1823. [2]Again, this was not an unusual practice where the bride and groom were from different parishes however James Morton was also from Mauchline therefore the reason may have been because they were newlyweds moving to a new parish, Auchinleck, soon after they were married.

Children

There are no Census records for Auchinleck in 1841.

In 1851 Margaret was 58 years old (1793) and living in Auchinleck, Ayrshire with her husband James and children Agnes, James, Matthew and Christina. [3]

in 1861 Margaret was 68 years old and living on Main Street, Auchinleck with her husband James. [4]

In 1871 Margaret was 79 years old and living at 33 Main Street, Auchinleck with Duncan Grant aged 28 who is described as a cousin. [5]

Margaret died on 5th May 1879 at Auchinleck, Ayrshire. [6] Her death was registered by her son, James Morton and Margaret is interred in Auchinleck cemetery, lair number 365.
