Biography

Elizabeth was baptised 7 July 1723[1] in the parish church of St John the Evangelist in Whitchurch in the Vale of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. She is the daughter of Jonathan Rickard and Elizabeth Toogood. Jonathan is listed as an aleman in the baptismal record, which was the name for a tavern keeper as opposed to a brewer.

Elizabeth married John Coleman in Whitchurch on 28 August 1740[2], aged 17.

Elizabeth and John have a son, Thomas[3], who is baptised on 9 May 1742 in Whitchurch.

On 16 December 1760[4], Elizabeth, now widowed and aged 37, remarries to Thomas Beccott, again in Whitchurch. Thomas, a widower, is from Hardwick with Weedon, the next village to the south, less than 2 miles distant.

On 21 Mar 1783[5] an Elizabeth Becket is buried in Hardwick with Weedon. This may well be our Elizabeth.

Research Notes

There are some questions surrounding the origins of Elizabeth Rickard and the parentage owing to the fact there were several Elizabeth Rickards baptised in Whitchurch in a five-year time span and the marriage record is a bit scant on detail.

If there is further information that can be obtained directly from the registers or by researching the other Elizabeth Rickards from this time period, it may help to conclusively prove or disprove if this Elizabeth was the individual to marry John Coleman and have his children.

In addition, the only site with data on Elizabeth is FindmyPast, which is behind a paywall. FamilySearch & FreeReg have yet to scan Whitchurch or Hardwick registers and hence we must rely on the paywall site.
