Biography

Edward Riddlesdale was born about 1592 in Assington, Suffolkshire, England.

He was probably son of John(B) Riddlesdale bpt Boxford, Suffolk 26 Sep 1556; bur Assington, Suffolk, 4 Jun 1629; who had m prob at Assington abt 1583 Dorcas ____, maiden name unknown, but prob related to John Vigorous of Langham, Essex; she was bur at Assington 24 Sep 1624.[1]

He married about 1619 Mary _____. "Jackson" as her maiden name has not been documented. If you have a source for this maiden name, please provide it.

Edward and Mary had several children:

(*)These three daughters were called "daughters" in the will of John Wyatt who had married Edward's widow, Mary.

He died before 9 Feb 1630/1631 when he was buried in Assington.

John Wyatt of Ipswich made his will 23 Nov. 1665 and gave to his wife Mary: “moreover she shall have the use of all my household goods together with my grandchild John Kemball by names as he shall have occasions to use them while he abides in the house, and… if my wife cannot live comfortably in the house with him then she shall have liberty to choose her another place of being in the town, and he shall supply her with wood and pay for her room… to John Kemball my grandchild my dwelling house and all the ground belongin to it and all mymeadow ground together with all my cattle and husbandry implements, provided he carry himself respectively towards my wife, and in case he shall not, then I give unto my said grandchild ten pounds and so not to have do with any part of my estate besides.” [2]

On 25 Mar. 1667: “I John Kimball of Ipswich, junior, husbandman, sell unto Theophilus Willson… my now dwelling house and houselot and pasture, with outhouses, fences and all other appurtenances with a six acre lot… and nineteen acres of marsh… being all the houses and lands give & bequeathed to me the said John Kimball by my grandfather John Wiate, late of Ipswich, deceased… the condition of this bargain & sale is such that if the above said John Kimball… pay… unto the abovesaid Theophilus Willson six pounds per annum in merchantable wheat, malt and Indian corn… for the use… of Mary the late wife of John Wiate of Ipswich during the term of the late natural life of the said Mary… In presence of…

On 16 June 1677/8 James Barker of Rowley sued John Kimball for not giving him 48 cords of firewood which was due to his wife: “formerly called Mary Wiate, grandmother to said Kimball” according to an agreement signed 15 Jan. 1665 that John should bring to his grandmother four cords of wood each year during her life in consideration of what his grandfather John Wiate enjoined him to do by will. Cordwood cost 5s per cord at the time.[4]

James Barker made his will 3 Sept. 1678. James “of Rowley in New England… born in Stragewell in Low Suffolk” left to his wife Mary the things she brought with her and the use of “the room we live in, with firewood ready cut for the fire from time to time, her rent at Ipswich and twenty shillings yearly for life, to be paid by my son Burzillai in work or as she shall see need to call for it, not money, and if any agreement appear of our Contract at marriage, that it be fulfilled equally by my executors”.[5]
