Biography

John Ridgway, son of Richard Ridgway and Abigail Stockton, married Hannah Brown in Burlington County, New Jersey on 05 May 1727.[1][2] . They had at least 4 children together[1]:

  1. Jane McCloud (1738 - 1806)[1]
  2. Richard Ridgway[1]
  3. Rachel McKay (1739 - 1784)[1]
  4. Mary Ridgway[1][3]

John and Hannah relocated from Burlington to Frederick County, Virginia near Hopewell in 1742 as cited in a removal certificate (requested 2 May 1742)[3] from the Burlington Meeting of the Society of Friends. John returned to Burlington in 1749 (Re-admitted to 4 Oct 1749)[3]. His daughter Mary also relocated from the Hopewell Meeting to the Burlington meeting in 1749 (certificate 1 May 1749)[3]. John returned to Hopewell in 1751 (request 7 Feb 1751)[3]. Mary returned to hopewell in 1750 (request 10 Mar 1750)[3].

Research Notes

  • George Ridgway gives John's marriage year as 1724[4]. This is contradicted by the New Jersey Marriage record, which give the date as 5 May 1727, and the place as .Burlington, New Jersey, United States[2]. Randolf[1] also gives 5 May 1727 as the date. RWG
  • George Ridgway's book gives John's mother as Richard's second wife, Abigail .[4] , which would require that his birth was after 1693. Both the "Encyclopedia of Pennsylvania Biography" and "South Jersey: A History, 1664-1924" have John as the son of Richard's first wife, Elizabeth [5][6], requiring a birth date before 1692. RWG
  • Regardless of the maternal parent, it is very unlikely that John was born in Prince Georges, colonial Maryland, as His father was not known to have lived there, rather he resided in Burlington, Colonial New Jersey from his arrival in 1679 until relocating to Crewcorne, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (modern day Fallsington, part of Falls Township, Pennsylvania), in about 1690. RWG and later to Springfield, New Jersey. Carrie
  • The John Ridgway born in Saint Johns Parish, Prince Georges, Maryland on 1 Sep 1716[7] is not this John Ridgeway, as both Birthplace and the father cited (John Ridgway) are incorrect. RWG
19 April 2021 - Removed birth location of Prince George's, Maryland, per RWG notes. I'm in agreement with RWG. John, the son of Richard was probably born in either Crewcorn, PA or Springfield, NJ based upon where Richard lived. Carrie
  • Randolf claims that the re-admission certificate of 4 Oct 1749 to the Burlington meeting, which he dates as 6 July 1749[1] (the difference likely being that between issuance and re-admission)[1], shows John to be a widower, implying that Hanna died some time before that. I have been unable to confirm that (have not found a burial entry in Hopewell meeting records, not any state record.). [1] This is supported by a transcribed extract from the Hopewell Friends Meeting for the marriage of Richard Ridgway to Margaret McKay 22 Dec,1762[8] at the Crooked Run Monthly Meeting near the village of Nineveh, now in Warren Co., Va. I have been unable to otherwise confirm that (have not found a burial entry in Hopewell meeting records on Ancestry.com, nor any state record). RWG

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Ridgway-46 and Ridgeway-49 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth date, same parents; the spellings "Ridgeway" and "Ridgway" appear to have be used interchangeably with no evidence that one is more correct than the other.

Ridgway-49 and Ridgway-46 do not represent the same person because: Different first names, different birth dates, different wives; instead, I believe the merge should be between Ridgeway-49 (spelled with an "e") and Ridgway-46 (no "e").

Ridgway-49 and Ridgway-46 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate

Ridgway-437 and Ridgeway-49 appear to represent the same person because: Both are the same person, but have different birth dates. 1 Sep 1716 is the correct birthdate.

The Marriage date of 5 May 1727 for John Ridgeway and Hannah Brown, would only make John Ridgeway, 10 years old. That's not possible. Either the Birth date is wrong or the marriage date is wrong or John Ridgway did not marry Hannah Brown. BUT something is very wrong here. Need Better sources to prove what is going on.
