Biography

Lydia Riggs AKA Rigg[1]

Origin

Lydia was a daughter of George Rigg of "Hewling's Point" on the Delaware River.[1] She administered her father's estate on March 3, 1687/8.[1]

Marriage and Children

"Joseph Cooper (born 1666, died 1731), second son of William, the emigrant, married, 1688, Lydia Riggs, a member of the Philadelphia Meeting of Friends. They resided on Coopers Creek, just east of the residence of his father. They had seven children, - Elizabeth, who married Samuel Mickle and died without issue; Joseph, Jr., who married, first, Mary Hudson, and, second, Hannah Dent; Lydia, who married John Cox and died without issue; Hannah, who married Alexander Morgan; Benjamin, who was three times married: first to Rachel Mickle, secondly to Hannah Carlisle (a widow née Clarke), and thirdly to Elizabeth Burcham (a widow née Cole); Sarah, who married Joshua Raper; and Isaac, who married Hannah Coates."[2]

Death and Legacy

"Lydia Cooper--Wife of Joseph was born in Ireland of English parents in ye year 1664. Lydia Cooper deceased ye 18th Day of ye eight month in the year 1736 & was buryed the 20th of same in the burying ground at Newton. "[3]

Legacies to grandchildren--Mary, daughter of son Joseph Cooper; Hannah, Lydia and Rachel, daughters of son Benjamin Cooper; Thomas, Lydia and Rachel, daughters of son Benjamin Cooper; Thomas, Lydia and Mary Raper, son and daughters of daughter Sarah, wife of Joshua Raper; Mary, Elisabeth, Lydia and Hannah, daughters of daughter Hannah, wife of Alexander Morgan. Daughter, Lydia Cock, son Isaac Cooper. Executors--son, Joseph Cooper, and son-in-law, Joshua Raper. Witnesses--John Preston, Nicholas Lynch, Elisabeth Mclelan. Affirmed 29 Nov. 1736.
1736, Nov. 16. Inventory (£485.15.7¼) includes "large Bible, 49 shillings," "228¾ yds. of linnen," £28.11.10. Appraisers--John Kay, Tho. Spicer."[4]
