Biography

Richard was Cherokee.

Richard Riley was born in the Cherokee Nation (East) about 1784. He was the son of Samuel Riley, a white trader, and Gu-Lu-Sti-Yu Doublehead, a Cherokee woman. He was one of eleven children of Samuel who were baptized by the Rev. Evan Jones on the 22nd of April, 1805. [1] Richard took a reservation under the treaty of 1817 "within the chartered limits of Alab. Ter. " [2] He married Diana Campbell and they were the parents of two daughters, Jennie and Elizabeth. [3] (James Hicks believes there was a third daughter, Annie). Richard's death date is uncertain; he does not appear on the 1835 Cherokee Census.
