A letter among the probate records, written to Mr. John Simkins, Ordinary of the District of Edgefield whose responsibility it is to open the probate and oversee its completion. The letter from Zachariah S. Brooks states, I am informed by Mrs. Riley that you wish me to state the reason that I would not act of the Will of Mr. John Riley, decd. My reason is I don't think that Mr . Riley was in mind sufficient to make a Will at the time the Will was made. I left him about two days before he departed and I am sure he was not himself and I am sure he got no better until death.[4] All of the children of John Riley were named in Bill for partition of all the land. Those named were William, James, Anna now wife of Benjamin Spikes, Isaac and John. In addition the minors under 21 Moses, Elizabeth, Sarah and Nathan.[5] He died August 23, 1827 as recorded on his monument at Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church Cemetery, Saluda, Saluda County, South Carolina [6]
