Biography

William was the eldest son of Nicholas and Hannah (Shrimplin) Riley and the brother of Isaac, John, Harriet, Eliza, Margaret, Mary, Abraham Shrimplin, Maria Rachel, Hannah, Almira, Susannah, George Washington, and Nicolas, Jr.. He was born in 1903 in Wellsburg, Virginia, which is now in West Virginia. His parents moved their family to Knox County, Ohio, in 1906, where Nicholas established a farm.

William married Susan Cummins in 1827. William and Susan had six sons and two daughters, all born in Ohio: Maria, Harriet, George Washington, William McCray, Nicholas Jackson, James, Eli Bruce, and Lewis Tellis. In 1853, William and Susan and their 8 children moved to Fayette County, Illinois, and settled on a farm near Beecher City, Illinois. The journey took them 21 days from Ohio. They traveled with two wagons, one pulled by horses and the other pulled by oxen named Beer and Brandy. Susan died in 1875 and is buried in Illinois. William died in 1883 and is buried in Riley Chapel Cemetery, Knox County, Ohio, where his parents and some of his other family members are buried.
