Biography

After the outbreak of world war one, William moved his family to Tingha, there he remained until he died on the 22nd of September 1944, and William Riley is buried as William O'Riley in the Roman Catholic section of the Tingha Cemetery. Martha died a few years later of brain hemorrhage on the 29th of September; she is also buried at Tingha.

William was the seventh child and the fourth son born to Edward, and Mary Anne, Born at Sallys Bottom, which is now North Richmond, on the 4th of October 1867.[1] William was Baptised at the St Matthew's Roman Catholic Church Windsor, on the 16th of July 1868, on the same day as his sister, Agnes Matilda, their God Parents were Joseph Smythe and Anna Goodwin, William moved to the new England District, where his uncle and cousins were, he became a teamster and was soon to own his own team of Pershiner's, he contracted to carry ore from Copeton to Tamworth.

William married Martha Jane McFarlane at Bingara on the 15th of December 1895, in the Wesleyan Church witnessed by Walter Murry, and Clara Hills, The officiating Minister was Herbert Moodey. Martha Jane was born at Vegetable Creek (Emmaville) on the 13th of September 1876 to a Mary Anne McFarlane, unmarried, and had given Richard Brown as fathers name when she registered Martha, and stated that she had another daughter, she gave her place of birth as Scotland, and her age as 26 yrs, Martha was raised as a Fletcher, and married, using that as her maiden name, there is no marriage registered between William Fletcher, and Mary Anne McFarlane.

Before they were married Martha Jane, had two Children, they were, Anne Jane and Albert, twins born in March 1894, on the 17th of may 1897 at Upper Bingara, Anne Jane died of burns she accidentally received, William tried to extinguish her burning clothes with his bare hands and himself received bad burns. After a Magistrates inquest, Anne Jane was buried that same day on the property at Upper Bingara.
