David was the son of Nicholas, Jr. and Elizabeth Riley. His father was a farmer, farming the land next to his grandfather on one side and his uncle George on the other. David was the youngest son of his parents. His siblings were Ransom, Martha J., Samuel, George, and Carrie. David's mother died when he was four years old, and it was several years before his father remarried.
Like his father and grandfather, David became a farmer in Knox County. He married Alvina. They adopted one child, a son, William Wayne Riley. David died in 1940 and is buried in Riley Chapel Cemetery, Knox County, Ohio.
