Biography

Born at sea in June 1791 on the Kitty which was one week out of Rio. Parents Edward Riley and Susannah Riley née Nairn.

John Riley was born in June of 1791 at sea when the KITTY was one week out of Rio. This can be established by documents signed by John stating his age, on each occasion his age changes after June, and on at least one occasion he stated that he came to the colony free.

If a child was born at sea he or she was be Baptised by the Master of the transport, and on reaching the colony was registered here by that Master.

Although the earliest church of England Parish register dates from the first year of settlement, 1788, it wasn't until 1825 that the Government passed an act that validated the practice of keeping birth, death, and marriage records.

Films of the early St Phillips registers have some pages so faded they could not be filmed, or the ink has bled and the pages are unreadable, fortunately not all pages are like this, some are in very good condition, but I did find that the year that John would have been registered, many pages are very faded and pages were blotched with ink.

After his mother Susanna married Robert Wells, they settled down at Field of Mars, John was schooled at Parramatta, my guess is that John and Esther were taught by the same teacher, as their handwriting had similarities.

In 1814 John married fellow convict Catherine Latimore née Hines.[1]

John passed away in 1854.[2]

Research Notes

If born at sea then this must have occurred in 1792. The Kitty's only voyage to New South Wales was in 1792: it left England on 31 March 1792 and arrived New South Wales on 18 November 1792.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
