Biography

Emma was born in 1873 in Goose Creek, WV, to Oliver Rinehart and Phoebe Garnett Ross. She spent all her life in the Goose Creek and nearby areas. She grew up there, leaving school before starting high school. She stayed for several years at her family's homestead helping to care for her siblings who were miners and farm laborers. When she was 28 years old in 1901, she married Lloyd Lownds Hoff in Cairo, WV and settled down near her family to be a farm wife. After losing a first stillborn child, the couple had three children together. Lloyd died in 1956, and Emma passed away from heart disease, like her husband, the following year. The couple is buried in Terry Cemetery in Glendale, WV.
