Biography

George was born about 1919. He is the son of David Ritchie and Grace Lamb. He served in the US Marine Corps from 14 Feb 1956 until 31 Jul 1962.

Graveside Services were held Wednesday, July 6 for George Arnold Richie, 75, who died at his home in Dedham on Monday, June 27, 1994. The 2 p.m. Services were held at the Coon Rapids Cemetery with military honors by the United States Marine Corps of Des Moines, the DeWitt Loustaunau Post 20 of the American Legion in Dedham and the Dale Christensen Post 4119 of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Audubon. A memorial service followed at 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Hansen officiating. Honorary casket bearers were Donnie Schmitz and Lawrence Madsen. George Arnold Ritchie was born April 25, 1919 in Guthrie County. He was the son of David C. and Grace (Lamb) Ritchie. The family lived on farms between Coon Rapids and Wichita. He attended World schools near his home and graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1938. George entered the United States Marine Corps, serving for over 21 years. He was stationed in the Pacific and witnessed the raising of the US flag on Iwo Jima during World War II. After his honorable discharge, Mr. Ritchie returned to Coon Rapids. He worked at the Perry pork processing plant until retirement. After retirement, he lived in Bayard before moving to Dedham. George was married to Julia Ortz. Three sons were born to this union. George had been in failing health for a couple of years with cancer. He died Monday, June 27, 1994 at his home in Dedham at the age of 75 years, two months and two days. He was a member of the DeWitt Loustaunau Post 20 of the American Legion in Dedham and the Dale Christensen post 4119 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Audubon. Survivors include his three sons, Dennis of Dedham and Gary and Thomas, both of California; six grandchildren; a brother, Laurence Ritchie and wife, Alta, of Le Center, Minnesota; three sisters, Jennie Whitten and her husband, Neal, of Carroll; Dorothy Blanchard and her husband, Mike, Coon Rapids and Eva Accola and her husband, Wayne, of Coon Rapids; a sister-in-law, Rae Andersen of Brookings, South Dakota; and a brother-in-law, Alva Palmer of Bayard. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Frank E. Ritchie; and two sisters, Margarette. Ritchie and Edna I. Palmer.
