Henry was born in 1749. Henry Rivers ... He passed away in 1830. [1]
The following comment is from Keith Gitttoes and relates to the photo of the London Inn : "The Rivers Family were prominent in Ivybridge for more than 60 years over three generations, and it started with Henry Rivers the Elder. In his time not much went on in the Village without him being involved. One local historian gave him credit for establishing the London Inn; this may or may not have happened because a record card in the Exeter Library shows that a Thomas Byrd took the London Inn on 11 October 1776. Henry had the Exeter Inn at Modbury but it was known of his interest in Ivybridge at this time. About 1781 Thomas Byrd died leaving his wife Elizabeth to run the London Inn. After Henry's wife died in Modbury in 1782 he moved to Ivybridge and eventually married Byrd's widow. He built up the reputation of the London Inn, and at the same time had an interest in the Rogers Arms in the Village. He bought land and property, including Stowford House in nearby Harford, to such an extent that he overstretched himself and in 1816 was declared bankrupt. From about 1814 he saw this coming and signed over the London Inn to a son, Henry the Younger, with a share to go to a grandson, William Rivers."
