Silas Andrew Rives was born on September 13, 1842, in Mayfield, Kentucky, the child of John William and Lucy Brown. He married Roseannah Jane West in 1893. They had eight children in 20 years. He died on March 23, 1927, in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, at the age of 84, and was buried there.
