Biography

Henry was born in Glasgow, and baptised on 25 July 1813 in Barony Parish, Church of Scotland

Henry emigrated to the U.S. at age 17, landing in New Orleans. He left there because it was quarantined due to an epidemic. Henry then found work along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. He spent some time in Caynga County, NY. eventually found his way to Dearborn, Michigan. There, he met and married Margaret Hall Rooney, a young widow with two children. They married February 4, 1845. In December, 1846, they moved to Deerfield Township, Livingston County, Michigan with their first child William and her two children. His wife Margaret purchased property in Deerfield. Henry made further purchases. They had four children, William, Thomas, Isabella and Margaret.

Henry's mother, Isabel Gray Robb, braved the ocean crossing three times to visit her son and his family. On the last visit, she became ill and died. She's buried in a little country cemetery near the original homestead of her son, Henry.

The Robbs were the first to clear the land, to cut timber and to build their log cabin in that part of America. They helped develop the first township and first parish church known in that part of the nation. Margaret and Henry Robb settled in Deerfield Township nine years after Michigan was admitted into the Union as a state in 1837.

Henry farmed the land, hunted in its woods, and fished in the nearby lakes and streams.
