Biography

Family History, Spencer Group one DNA as compiled by Donald Lines Jacobus, the Four Spencer Brothers and their descendants, 64 pages Spencer Genealogy. Spencerville, Canada is listed on Historical Places on the Canadian National Register, Descendants of Michael and Isabel Spencer are proven residents. When starvation and hard times hit the area 1790s, the building of the Spencer Grist Mill and Saw Mill brought serious relief to these settlers, Patriot and EUL, embroiled in the Revolution. Read the dissertation of Phd. Timothy Compeau, Univ.of Western Ontario. First four generations of Michael Spencer 1611-1653 are available at familytreedna/spencer, colorized chart.

Birth

Isabel's surname at birth is Unknown. [1] The date of her birth, and location, are also unknown. She may have been born about 1615, based on the age of her husband Michael Spencer.

Marriages

Isabel married Michael Spencer "by about 1640".[1] Michael is known to have arrived in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1634.[2] The location of the marriage is unknown.[1] Michael Spencer died by 29 Nov 1653.[1]
Michael Spencer left a will. Michael Spencer left a small estate which was sold by his brother Gerard, his estate administrator, for the support of Michael's children.[3] Their children were John, Susannah, Michael and possibly William.[3]
Isabel (Unknown) Spencer, widow, married second, a year and a day after the death of Michael Spencer, by 30 Nov 1654 Thomas Robbins, a carpenter from Salem, Massachusetts.[1][3]
Note: Isabel was most likely married to Thomas Robbins of Salem in Lynn, Massachusetts, where she had lived before the death of her husband Michael Spencer. His brother Gerard Spencer lived at that time in Salem,[3] and since Isabel's house was sold for the support of her children, she and the children were most likely living with Michael's brother Gerard Spencer in Lynn for the year between Michael's death and her second marriage.

Salem Court

On 31 Mar 1657, "Thomas Robins and Henry Skerry [were] bound for the appearance of Elizabeth Robins when the court shall call for her." At the same court, "Thomas Robins [was] bound to bring his wife, Isabel Robans, to next court at Salem to answer suspicion against her." On 1 Jul 1657, "Thomas Robins [was] bound for his wife's appearance to answer to a charge of concealing things stolen by her son. She was fined & ordered to pay Rob[er]t Lord.[4]

Death

Isabel (Unknown) (Spencer) Robbins died on 9 Oct 1674 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts.[5][1]

The majority of the Robbins children can't be hers. She was married to Michael Spencer and having children with him when most of them were born.

Thank you Cathy.

I posted comments regarding the dispute to the profiles of both Thomas Robbins (1641-) and John Robbins (1643-), In both cases, I suggested the relationship should be severed.

Also posted comments to the profiles of Mary Robbins (1653-) and Unknown Robbins (1659-) seeking reliable source that they are Isabel's children.

merge completed. The surname "West" is unsubstantiated.
We agree, however, in family circles that wish to remain private, it is understood, although unsubstantiated, she came from West Heritage. We will keep her unknown, thanks for your interest. You know, the Aldrich surname is quite important in our past, Aldrich Settlement Road and Aldrich/Greene Cemetery
Are you trying to say that you think and essentially have come to the conclusion that she is a West? Or are you saying she could be an Aldrich?

What I am saying is, the early families in the colonies 1620-1732 are very closely connected, and remain so today. Death came early to many, when the Continental Congress allowed settlement west of the Hudson River 1790, these allied families came into the wilderness, many to Canada where the land was cheap and free, and many to Northern New York where our family story is verified. Life along the St Lawrence River, to me, is one of the eight wonders of the world. I am okay with Isabel unknown being one on my many grandmothers, but wish I could bring closure to her. My 81 years has taught me some lessons, to keep searching for her loved ones. Bless you.

Unknown-137152 and West-5199 appear to represent the same person because: identical ancestors, married first Michael Spencer, married next Thomas Robbins, Isabel and Michael left wills.

Croad-44 and Unknown-137152 appear to represent the same person because: time has passed and no sourced have been provided to support the data on Croad-44. It is therefore agreed that the two profiles represent the same person and therefore, should be merged into the "Unknown-137152" profile. Thanks for helping to improve WikiTree.

Robbins-1869 and Unknown-137152 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, sort of, same death date and place. Even though the bio is of the minimalist variety, it looks to be the same person.

Gerard_Spencer (1614-1685) who lived at the time in Lynn, and is mentioned as Isabel's brother-in-law who administrated her deceased husband's estate, is the 10th great-grandfather of my husband. Hello cousins:)
Please see the updated and sourced profile for Isabel Unknown.

It is possible that Isabel Croad-44 (this profile) is the same person as Isabel Unknown but there many issues that need to be cleared up before a merge.

1. She was not born in 1620 in Middlesex, Massachusetts. 1620 is when the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. There was no Middlesex. There was not even Massachusetts, just Plymouth Colony.

2. There is no evidence for her surname at birth to be Croad (or any other name, it is unknown).

3. Isabel married Michael Spencer, her first husband, before 1640, and he died by Nov 29, 1653. Isabel married Thomas Robbins of Salem, Massachusetts by 30 Nov 1654 - a year after being widowed. There is no chance she had children with a surname of Robbins before 1655 - eliminating four of the five children on this profile. Isabel was busy having children with her husband Michael Spencer from 1640 - 1648, named John, Susannah, Michael.

4. Isabel (Unknown) (Spencer) Robbins died 9 Oct 1674 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts.

5. Thomas Robbins took another wife, 11 Mar 1674/5, named Mary (Gould), widow of Richard Bishop.

Please note: it is very difficult to document profiles with family trees, unless the trees themselves are well documented. I appreciate your contributions to WikiTree and hope these corrections are not deemed offensive, they are merely food for thought.

The Puritan Great Migration uses as its primary source the works of Robert Charles Anderson, which can be found on Ancestry.com and also on NEHGS, and in libraries.

Sincerely, April Dauenhauer

Wife of Michael Spencer 1611-1653 (dna Spencer Group one) married Thomas Robbins after the death of Michael, she is a work in progress, her maiden name is believed to be Isabel West. Saying Robbins was her first husband is a gross error.
According to TAG 27:163, she married first Michael Spencer, who died in 1653. She married second Thomas Robbins, and died Oct 9, 1674. Thomas Robbins married after Isabel's death.

This is at odds with the info currently in the bio (which shows marriages reversed), so was unsure whether to change a PPP profile. Here is a $ link to the TAG article: https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/american-genealogist-the/image?pageName=163&volumeId=11884&rId=23575872
