Daniel Roberdeau was born in 1727 on the Island of St. Christopher, West Indies. His parents were Isaac Roberdeau and Mary Cunyngham.[1] His father was a French Huguenot from Scotland.
He married firstly Mary Bostwick on 3 Oct 1761 in St. Christopher, West Indies. Children:
After Mary died in 1777 he married secondly Jane (Jean) Milligan on 2 Dec 1778 in Pennsylvania. Children:
He died on January 05, 1795 in Winchester, Virginia.
Daniel was a merchant, a Pennsylvania Assemblyman, a Presbyterian, a Mason, and a privateer. On 4 Jul 1776 he was elected 1st Brigadier-General of the Pennsylvania troops. He was a member of the Continental Congress and signed the Articles of Confederation. He served in the US Congress for three terms. He worked a lead mine during the Revolutionary War at Fort Roberdeau, Bedford, Virginia. He was a friend of George Washington after the war. His son Isaac was an assistant engineer in laying out the city of Washington D.C. in 1791, and built canals in Pennsylvania.
