Biography

Ann Ellen was born in 1893 to Hugh Roberts, a gamekeeper from Llangwm, near Bala, and Margaret Roberts of Llanuwchllyn. Her GRO Birth Certificate reads: "99 / Fifth June 1893 Fronheulog Llandderfel R.S.D. / Anne Ellen / Girl / Hugh Roberts / Margaret Roberts formerly Roberts / Gardener Domestic / Hugh Roberts Father Fronheulog Llandderfel / Eighteenth July 1893 / Edward Jones Registrar."

A few years after Ann Ellen was born the family moved to Beech House in Penrhyncoch, near Aberystwyth (c.1895). By 1901 the Roberts family were living at Tancoed, Capel Dewi in Penrhyncoch. The family moved again after that and by 1911 were living in Panteg in the village, but by now Ann Ellen had moved out. She was lodging with the Mason family at Glanrafon, Bowstreet (Trefeirig). It is on this Census that Ann Ellen confirms her birth at Fronheulog. Her occupation at the time was as a servant doing dairy work.

A year later she married William Morgan of Elerch and straight away they began producing the first of their 17 offspring! (It was a task that took the couple 23 years). The family lived firstly at Ty haearn (Iron house), a house made of corrugated metal, and then at Court Villa, on the road into Penrhyncoch.

Sadly, four of the children died as infants and are buried in the same grave as Ann Ellen and William. These four are:

Gwladys May, born November 1920, died October 1921. Aged 11 months. Sarah Elinola Lilian, October 1925 to November 1926. Aged one year. And the twins: Islwyn, born and died on 18th February, 1931. Thomas James who died in July 1931, aged 4 or 5 months.

William died in 1943.

Ann's GRO Death Certificate reads: "26 / Eleventh December 1952 Cwrt Villa Penrhyncoch Trefeirig R.D. / ANN ELLEN MORGAN / Female / 59 Years / Widow of William Morgan Bricklayer / 1a Cachexia; b. Chronic Pancreatitis Certified by D. Lloyd Davies M.R.C.S. / F. Binks Son-in-law Present at the death Brynteg Penrhyncoch Bow Street Cards. / Eleventh December 1952 / W A Morgan Deputy Registrar."
