Biography

Origin

No birth record for Mary Roberts has been found, but we know she was the daughter of Andrew Roberts from a record found in the Testamentary Proceedings of the Provincial Court Liber 15C folio 87. A brief entry of 1694 says that Edward Parrish, who married the daughter of Andrew Roberts is suing Dr. Wolfran Hunt, the administrator of said Roberts. [1] Her birth year is an estimate based on the fact that she was a grandmother of at least five children by 1722 and marriage at age 16 was common in Maryland in the 17th century.

Marriage & Family

Mary was married to Edward Parrish before 1694. She was the mother of at least seven children, 4 girls and 3 boys all mentioned in the will of Edward Parish. Edward Parrish died in 1722 and Mary lived as a widow managing his large holdings with the help of her sons until she married as her second husband, Stephen Warman. Their marriage was registered in the parish of All Hallows in Anne Arundel County on 16 MAR 1735. [2]

The marriage of Stephen Warman and Mary Parrish was the product of a written prenuptial agreement between the two as spelled out in his will:

"In the first place my will is that my loving wife Mary Warman fully enjoy all that was hers before we were married that is now left according to an agreement in writing between me & the said Mary before our intermarriage & my will is that what she now hath of what was hers before we married be not appraised into nor reckoned any part of my estate, whereas by the same agreement, she the said

““Mary was not to claim any rights of dower unto any of my estate either real or personal which I shall be possessed of at my death but what I shall give her by will."[3]

Mary lived ten more years as a widow and a great-grandmother surrounded by her'Bold text' family. Many of the legacies mentioned in her will written 26 OCT 1750 were presumably left to grandchildren.

Mary has been removed as the spouse of Edward Parrish d. 1722 . The Edward Parrish who died in 1722 was the grandfather of 5 children. The will does not fit that family. An effort will be made to place her in the correct family. My current thinking is that she was a sister or daughter of that Edward Parrish.
