Robert, son of unknown & Mary Anne Roberts, was baptised on 18 January 1829 in St. Peter's, Chester, Cheshire, England.[1]
He was born in Watergate St, Chester, Cheshire, the illegitimate son of Mary Ann Roberts and Robert Roberts, a watchmaker from Bangor in Wales who was believed to be related to Mary Ann (perhaps a cousin?).
He was adopted by John Draycott when John married Robert's mother, Mary Ann, and for some years went by the name of Robert Draycott, but in 1842, when he was apprenticed as a Cordwainer (shoemaker), he returned to his birth name of Roberts.
On 12 June 1859 when he was 20, he married Jane Jones Harrison, a 26 year old widow. They were married at All Saints Church, Liverpool; his mother and Stepfather were witnesses. (Registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1859 in the Liverpool district, Volume 8B, page 106.)[2]
In the 1871 census Robert (age 42), Shoemaker, was the married head of household in Tranmere, Cheshire, England.[3]
