Biography

Bertha Agusta Roberts was born in 1876 in Missouri.

She married James W. Wood on 23 Apr 1898 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.[1] Their known children:

  1. Morgan Vinyard Wood (1899–Deceased)
  2. Eunice Byrd (Wood) Garner (1904–Deceased)
  3. Theron Wendall Wood (1907-1983)
  4. Thelia W Wood (abt.1907–Deceased)
  5. Wilma C Wood (1910-1991)
  6. Bertha Lucile Wood (1914-1956)
  7. William H Wood (1922-1975)

The 1900 Census[2] shows her at age 24 with her husband and one child in Byrd Township (north part excl. Jackson city), Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.

The 1910 Census[3] shows her at age 34 with her husband and four children in Byrd Township, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.

The 1920 Census[4] shows her at age 42 with her husband and four children in Cape Girardeau Ward 3, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.

The 1930 Census[5] shows her at age 54 with her husband and three children in San Bernardino, San Bernardino County, California.

The 1940 Census[6] shows her at age 64, widowed, and living with one son in San Bernardino Judicial Township, San Bernardino, California.

She died on 6 Nov 1957 in California. Her obituary in The San Bernardino County Sun, 8 Nov 1957, page 40:

Mrs. Bertha Agusta Wood, 81, of 3071 Davidson St., died Wednesday at a San Bernardino hospital. A native of Jackson, Mo., she had resided in San Bernardino and California 33 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, William N. of San Bernardino and Theron W. of Cochran; two daughters, Mrs. Eunice Byrd Thompson of Santa Ana and Mrs. Wilma Milton of Manhattan Beach; sister, Mrs. Ella Hobson of Tennessee; a brother, Byrd Roberts of Missouri; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at Mark B. Shaw Chapel. Interment will be in Montecito Memorial Park.
