OBITUARY. CAPTAIN H. LESLIE ROBERTS, V.D. Much regret was expressed in military and railway circles on Saturday when it became known that Captain H. Leslie Roberts, acting Divisional Englneer at Newcastle, had died at M.R.D. Hospital.
Captain Roberts, accompanied by Mr. Hunt, came to Taree on Thursday morning In connection with the proposed establishment of railway refreshment rooms on the line. He spent a rather busy day, and went to Fotheirlngham's Hotel, where he stayed on Thursday night, intending to leave by special train for Newcastle at 10.45 on Friday morning.
At about 7 o'clock in the morning he had a cup of tea, and appeared quite well. At 8 o'clock he was seized with an apoplectic fit, and an ambulance was sent for, and the unfortunate gentleman was conveyed to the Manning River District Hospital, where Dr. Gormley attended him. It was soon realised that his condition was serious, and a telegram was sent to his wife.
He was unconscious when he arrived at the Hospital, arid remained in that condition throughout the day. His condition became more serious during the night, and at 2 a.m. on Saturday morning he passed away. Mrs. Roberts came up to Dungog, and, securing a motor there, she hurried to Taree, but, unfortunately, arrived half-an-hour too late. He leaves a wife and a daughter, 4½ years old. The remains were taken to Newcastle by Saturday morning's train.
Deceased, who was about 50 years of age, was a draughtsman in railway service, and left New castle on Thursday morning. Captain Roberts was a son of the late Mr. J. Roberts, for many years Superintendent of Tramways In New South Wales.
Shortly after the outbreak of war he was placed in command of the camp at Broadmeadow, and subsequently was in charge at Fort Scratchley. He was one of the first to volunteer for active service, but owing to heart trouble was rejected. The funeral took place on Sunday at Sandgate, with military honors.
