Came to Australia unassisted in 1853 bringing his 11 year son to set himself up leasing a Hotel in Bendigo before starting an Iron Foundry. His wife Elizabeth came in 1856 with other children. This Foundry eventually hired over 100 men and Abraham went back to Cornwall twice bringing back workers for his Foundry.
Sir John Quick, in addressing a hundred foundrymen at Roberts and Sons
foundry to-day, urged the importance of the iron industry in its primary and
secondary stages . He said there were mountains of iron ore in Australia, and a large American syndicate had offered to start iron making works in Australia which could be worked profitably under proper industrial conditions, provided it received a Commonwealth bonus.
He saw no objection to granting a bonus:
in the form of a loan secured on the assets of the company and repaid to the
Government before any dividends were declared. It was objected by some that
such a bonus would be assisting a private monopoly, but he did share that view
