SIR JOHN QUICK AT BENDIGO. IMPORTANCE OF IRON INDUSTRY.
BENDIGO, Monday. [2]

Sir John Quick, in addressing a hundred foundrymen at Roberts and Sons foundry to-day, urged the importance of the iron industry in its primary and secondary stages . He said there were mountains of iron ore in Australia, and a large American syndicate had offered to start iron making works in Australia which could be worked profitably under proper industrial conditions, provided it received a Commonwealth bonus.
He saw no objection to granting a bonus: in the form of a loan secured on the assets of the company and repaid to the Government before any dividends were declared. It was objected by some that such a bonus would be assisting a private monopoly, but he did share that view
