Nelson Evening Mail , 16 July 1917: The death occurred at Palmerston. North of Mrs G. Canton, sen., at the age of 77 years. The deceased arrived in NZ with her parents Mr & Mrs Roberts in the sailing ship Thomas Harrison in 1842 and resided in Nelson for 40 years sharing in the hardships incidental to pioneering..Five daughters and three sons are left to mourn her loss, as follows :--Messrs H. J. Canton (Palmerston), G. Y. Canton (Taumarunui), and X. Canton (Wanganui), Mrs Elesraore, Mrs Miller, Mrs Ingham, Mrs Knowles, and Mrs Mellor. The youngest son, O. J. Canton, was killed in action at Gallipoli two years ago. Mrs Canton's husband predeceased her by three years

ONE OF THE PIONEERS. / The death, occurred at 1 o'clock this morning, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs A. Mellor, Campbell Street, of Mrs G. Canton, relict of the late G. Canton, who pre-deceased her three years ago. The deceased arrived with her parents in Nelson in 1842 in the sailer Thomas Harrison, and went through the many hardships and adventures incidental to the pioneering days. She possessed an extraordinarily retentive memory of the historic events of the early days and was considered by her friends to be a walking encyclopedia in regard to political events and individualities. The deceased enjoyed great popularity amongst an extensive circle of friends in all parts of the North Island, who will be grieved to hear of her demise. She has left a family of eight—five daughters and three sons: Mrs Elsmore (Gisborne), Mrs T. Miller (Hastings), Mrs Ingham (Thames Valley), Mrs H. Knowles and Mrs A. Mellor (Palmerston North), and Cr. H. J. Canton of this town G. Y. Canton (Taumaranui), and Mr L. Canton (Kokakariki). Her youngest son (C. J. Canton) was killed in action two years ago. [2]
