Biography

NOTE: John Roberts, currently attached as his son, is being actively researched as he is not supported by the current sources. Cody-939 06:01, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Randall Roberts was born on 16 May 1704 in County Cork, Ireland.[1][2] He was the eldest son and heir of Thomas Roberts of Britfieldstown, County Cork,[3] and Jane Hodder.[1][2]

On 2 February 1734 in County Cork, he married Martha Westropp.[1][2][4] A marriage settlement was made on 1-2 February 1733 (1733/34), with a deed of lease and release lodged on 12 November 1748.[5]

Randall and Martha had issue:

  1. Sir Thomas Roberts,[1][2] Bart, eldest son b 27 May 1738 m Amy Johnson
  2. John Roberts[1][2] second son b abt Feb/March 1739 at the earliest (more likely later than this)
  3. Martha Roberts[1][2] m Edward Galwey
  4. Hannah Roberts[1][2] m Nicholas Green Evans
  5. Jane Roberts[1][2] m James Norcott
  6. Anne Roberts[1][2] m William Anderson
  7. Frances Roberts, known as Nanny[1][2] m Arthur Norcott

He succeeded to the Britfieldstown estate on the death of his father in 1744.

In 1775, Randal Roberts assumed the Roberts baronetcy of Glassenbury, County Kent.

Jane Roberts, his daughter (the daughter of Sir Walter Roberts, 6th and last Baronet of Glassenbury) and eventually his sole heiress, married on 23 October 1752, George (Beauclerk) 3d Duke of St. Albans, but died s.p. in December 1788 and was buried at Cranbrook. The manor of Glassenbury passed, under her will, to Thomas Roberts of the county of Cork, her Grace being apparently under the impression that he was of her family, inasmuch as his great great grandfather, the Rev. Thomas Roberts, Chancellor of the diocese of Cork (died 1664, aged about 74), was, in a pedigree (by Hawkins, Ulster, 22 June 1775), made identical with Thomas Roberts, 2nd son of the 1st Baronet Sir Thomas Roberts. The last-mentioned Thomas Roberts, however, died s.p. (without offspring) in 1644. Had such descent been proved, it would have carried with it the Baronetcy of 1611 and the right to the Coat of Arms borne by those Baronets. That pedigree, however, was rejected by the Heralds' College, so a new Coat of Arms was granted to him, and the Grantee was created a Baronet on 20 September 1809. Now he was being described as "of Glassenbury, co. Kent and Brightfieldston, co. Cork''[6]

He passed away in July 1785, with Britfieldstown passing to his eldest son and heir, Sir Thomas Roberts.

Death Notice - Hibernian Chronicle 4 July 1785
at Britfieldstown in the 81st year of his age, Sir Randol Roberts, Bart....estate descends to his eldest son, now Sir Thomas Roberts, Bart.[7]

Research Notes

The Roberts Baronets of Glassenbury accepted this Britfieldstown line as their descendants but it is still debated. Cokayne states that Rev Thomas Roberts was not the second son of Sir Thomas Roberts. This is a separate issue to the J Montgomery Seaver fraud (see below).

There are conflicting death dates and places. From the death notice in the Hibernian Chronicle on 4 July 1785, it would appear that he died in Britfieldstown, County Cork, Ireland in 1785 not Surry, North Carolina, United States in 1803.

As this Roberts line has been the victim of genealogy fraud by J Montgomery Seaver all profiles are being researched to find credible sources to authenticate the pedigree. Please do not rely on the information until this is completed. Some of the information in the Seaver books is correct.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Randal by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Randal:

I see this note above: NOTE: John Roberts, currently attached as his son, is being actively researched as he is not supported by the current sources. Cody-939 06:01, 8 April 2023 (UTC). I also see many of the same DNA connections listed on the top left of both John's and Randal's pages. I'm not sure how the DNA matches on WikiTree work - do they help prove or disprove anything about John being Randal's son?

Roberts-6690 and Roberts-19632 appear to represent the same person because: the dates and places are exactly the same.
