Biography

Sue was born 15 April 1936 in Coeur d' alene, Idaho to John Roberts and Therma (Lincoln) Roberts . Her parents were living there while her father worked for the CCC. She grew up in San Francisco along with her sister In June 1955 she married Jim Hawes. They were both in school at Brown. They finished their degrees there and moved to Santa Barbara. A few years later they moved to Marshall, Texas where Jim taught chemistry at a small African American college, Wiley University. Several times she was confronted by racial prejudice because her husband worked at a black college. (For instance the hospital wasn't sure whether she belonged in the white or black delivery room.) She had 3 living children.

Eventually they moved to New Orleans around 1967. Once her kids were in school, she worked as a Botanist in the Corps of Engineers and an active environmentalist. She wrote environmental impact statements and jokingly said that her job was to keep the Corps from paving the whole world. Sue worked to build bridges between the Corps and various environmental groups. She was also a pioneer as a female biologist and mentored many women as they entered the field.

She was a member of the Audubon Society, Sierra Club, Louisiana Wildlife Federation and the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana. . She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and enjoyed attending Exponent II reunions in New Hampshire. The Exponent is women's organization made up of mostly liberal women from the church. It had a magazine and Sue wrote a few articles for it.
