Research

Robertson vs Robinson (interesting parallels between Susannah Lewis and Catherine Robertson Transcriptions of Early Colonial Records for Collins children (sons of Joseph and Catherine) show the 1741-1745 transfer from John Robertson (presumed married Ann Holloway). [Pruitt]

[southern colonist files - many court records lost/burned will abstract not located] John spelled Roberson in his will at Albemarle, [of King & Queen] married Ann Holliday, daughter of William, whose will was probated 1744. In his will John Roberson leaves his personal property to his sister Elizabeth and names his brother Benjamin executor. Presumably His wife Ann died shortly after marriage, as there appears to have been not more than two or three children. One was Elizabeth, who did not marry. John Roberson divided his real property for nominal considerations among the sons of Joseph Collins

Note the Similarities Between name discrepancy as it relates to wife of Joseph Collins married Susannah Roberson (vs aka LEWIS). Benjamin Robinson, brother of John, married Susannah Brock, daughter of Joseph Brock, son of Henry Brock, by 1785. Joseph Brock’s wife was Susannah Branhan, daughter of Daniel and wife Elizabeth (will Spotsylvania, June 1, 17935)

About 1701 John Robinson (son of Christopher Robinson}, married Catherine Beverley, daughter of Major Robert Beverley of Middlesex County. They had seven children, including John (1704-1766), speaker of the House of Burgesses and treasurer of the colony. In the summer of 1726 Catherine Robinson died and shortly thereafter her husband seems to have left Middlesex. A marriage settlement with his second wife in 1731 places Robinson at the time in Spotsylvania County. His new wife was Lady Mary Bathurst of Essex County, daughter of Lancelot Bathurst of New Kent County and widow of both Francis Meriwether and Reuben Welch.

Discrepancy

No original source records have been located to confirm birth or marriage records. It appears that some erroneous information may have been published, and perhaps republished/reported, making the “actual facts” obscure. There is a great deal of conflicting information surrounding the Collins Family of VA – Many Source-to-Source discrepancies; co-mingling, Lack of records; conflicting family stories; number of Collin’s with the same names, etc.

  • An Effort has been made to update/split individual information from the Contemporary Profiles with co-mingled data on various "Collins (see individual profiles for more detailed information). Researchers are encouraged to reverify (and add source) information; making adjustments to profiles as applicable to the source.
Date Discrepancies There are wide variations in the birthdates for Joseph Collins and Catherine, between 1660-1690. Abt. 1690- appears to be a likely time (presumably Isle of Wright), based upon the marriage dates and approximate ages of Joseph's children. and IGI References (Joseph's 1st child b about 1685-20=1665/1667 -- likely m2X)
Generational Discrepancy - Ann Holiday b 1675, mother of Catherine Robertson born 1690, mother of Joseph Collins b 1686. Either parents are misidentified, or indicated date of birth(s) in error.

Hi all. I found this source (although how accurate I’m not sure, as it doesn’t have anything linked to prove), and I just wanted someone more familiar with this profile to give it a look because the estimated birth date would line up correctly for one of my ancestors (Collins-1694), who is listed as her first child with Joseph on this page. Her parents listed in this link are different though, so also another discrepancy. I do know this site does sometimes have useful info when sources are cited.

Robertson-9719 and Robinson-3066 are not ready to be merged because: Not sure these are same people...different last names
Robertson-9719 and Robinson-3066 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be profiles for the same person. Should her maiden name be Robinson? If yes, please agree to merge the two profiles. Thanks!

Yes Tanya, this profile is a merge of two people who are not the same person. I don't know how to correct this.

Her children were born before her???
this appears to be a merge of two separate people. One was born in 1688, the other in 1668. One was born after the child, one before. These profile need to be separated.
Robinson-4755 and Robertson-3230 appear to represent the same person because: Pretty sure these are the same person. If you have confirmation of the maiden name, use yours; otherwise, just note the additional one in the edit field provided. Thanks!
