Biography

George Robertson was born about 1713 in Henrico County, Virginia. He was the son of Jeffrey Robertson and Elizabeth Bowman.

George first appears in records with his his father's will of 1734. He inherited about 100 acres of land on Skinquarter Creek, part of 400 acres patented in 1738 and adjoining his brother, Jeffrey. This 100 acres was inherited by son, James. George made other acquisitions as well, all in the immediate area of today's Skinquarter community.

George is reported to have married Jane Gates. She is reported to have been the daughter of James Gates, who died about 1740 in Henrico Co. James Gates, and his sons, were adjoining neighbors of George on Skinquarter Creek. Jane was reportedly born about 1715 and died in March 1759, however no records are known to support those dates. James Gates died about 1740 and will records for Henrico Co., 1738-1743, are probably lost.

Children of George and Jane (named in will):

  1. James Robertson, b. c1734, Chesterfield Co,; d. 1822?
  2. George Robertson
  3. Lodawick Robertson, b. c1742; d. 1788, Chesterfield Co, VA
  4. Phoebe Robertson Sims
  5. Margaret Robertson Covington
  6. Jane Robertson Farrar (Farmer?)
  7. Elizabeth Robertson Brown married George Brown

George wrote his will in 1775 but it wasn't proved in court until 1783.

Map Information

The attached map features the 400 acre patent for "Jeffery Robinson" from 20 July 1738 (in yellow). Located on the north side of Skinquarter Creek, the land was actually in what is today's Powhatan Co. The smaller tract outlined in pink/red was the land inherited by George and passed on to his son, James. Other tracts owned by George were not adjoining this one, although they were close.
