Lewis Robertson was born about 1784, based on the date of his initial appearance in the Culpeper Co., Virginia tax records as a tithable male[1]. Not long after 1802, he married Lucy Stewart, the daughter of William Stewart and his wife Elizabeth (Field) Stewart[2]. In 1808 Lewis Robertson purchased land in Culpeper County, but resold it the following year. About 1811[3], he removed with his family to Adair County, Kentucky, where he bought 219 3/4 acres of land on Russell's Creek in May, 1813; and in 1828 he obtained a further 50 acres along Petit's Fork of Russell's Creek[4]. Lewis Robertson died in 1835[5].
↑ See Dorman, note 2 at page 147, showing that the will of William Stewart, witnessed by Lewis Robertson and proved in 1802, still names William's daughter as Lucy Stewart. The will of his widow Elizabeth Stewart, proved in 1821, names daughter Lucy Robertson. Specific slaves named among bequests to Lucy in each will later appear in the inventories of the estates left by Lewis Robertson and his widow Lucy Robertson.
↑ Dorman notes that Culpeper property tax records are missing from 1805 to 1810, but after they resume in 1811, Lewis Robertson is not listed paying personal property taxes. He further points to the obituary of Lewis' son Lewis Jr., who, it is asserted, was born in May, 1811 in Culpeper County and removed to Kentucky at a very young age. See Dorman, note 2, at page 147.
↑ See Dorman, note 6 at page 148, citing Adair County deed books C at 251-2 and G at 217-18.
↑ There was a sale of his estate on December 3 of that year. See Dorman, note 9 at page 148, citing Adair County will book D at 33-5.
