Nathaniel Robertson, son of Christopher and Sarah Robertson, was born October 21, 1722, and baptized on January 10, 1722/23, per the register of Bristol Parish in Prince George County, Virginia.[1] His parents at the time were living near White Oak Swamp in what is now Dinwiddie County. At a young age, he moved with his parents to Woody Creek in Amelia (now Nottoway) County where he became a prominent land and mill owner.
Sometime in the middle or late 1740s, Nathaniel married Elizabeth [Unknown], probably the daughter of a nearby landowner. She is named in a 1766 deed.[2] Per his will, they had at least nine children: Richard, Christopher, Elizabeth, Sarah, James, Mary Ann, Robert, Martha, Pascal and William.
They appear to have lived first on 298 acres on the north side of Lazaretto Creek which were patented to him in 1746.[3] Here, near the present Nottoway courthouse, he operated a water mill.[4]
About 1761, they moved a few miles to the northwest to the south side of Deep Creek on 1053 acres he purchased from Ed Booker.[5] In 1774 he sold 66 acres of his Lazaretto Creek land to the Parish Vestry, whose glebe land adjoined his property.[6]
From the Amelia County tithes list and his will we know Nathaniel owned the following slaves: Sampson, Pompey, Jimmy, James, Samuel, Sue, Gideon, Spain, and Lucy whose children were Tammy, Cloe and Phillis.
Wife Elizabeth is last mention in the deeds in 1774. Nathaniel married next Anne [Unknown]. She relinquished her dower in a 1786 deed.[7] Per his will, they had at least four children: Nathaniel, Peter, Christopher and Nancy.
[Nottoway County formed from Amelia County in 1789.]
Nathaniel Robertson wrote his will on January 10, 1794, stating that he was sick and weak, and died a few weeks later. His will was probated in the Nottoway County court on February 6, 1794. To his wife Anne he lent the dwelling house and plantation during her widowhood, then it was to go to his four youngest children, Nathaniel, Peter, Christopher and Nancy, as they came of age. To sons Pascal and William, who were of age but for whom he had not provided, he left a special legacy. To his seven eldest children, Richard Robertson, Elizabeth Fowlkes, Sarah Spain, James Robertson, Mary Ann Porter, Robert Robertson and Martha Walton, he left nothing, having provided for them at the time of their marriage.[8]
By the time of Nathaniel's death, his eldest daughter Elizabeth Fowlkes had moved to Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and sons Richard, James, and Pascal and daughter Sarah Spain and possibly others had moved to Wake County, North Carolina.
Feb. 13, 2021: Mary (May) Robertson (abt.1738-) was removed as his wife along with 6 children who appear to be hers. Names differ from those in Nathaniel’s will.
