Caroline I. Robertson was born in 1842 in Yates county, New York. She was the daughter of Robert Robertson, born in 1794 in England ^[1] or Scotland, ^[2] died in 1852 in Potter, Yates county, New York, ^{[3] [4] [5]} and Sophia Yeckley, born in 1810 in Germany, ^[6] or Orange county, New York, ^[7] died in 1867, also in Potter. ^{[8] [9] [10]}

In 1850 Caroline E. Robertson is recorded as being eight years of age and living in the household of her father Robert Robertson in Potter, Yates county, New York. ^[11]

In 1855 Caroline I. Robertson is recorded as being thirteen years of age and living in the household of her father in Potter, Yates county, New York. ^[12]

Caroline was married to John W. Shoemaker. Caroline and John had at least seven children:
