Biography

Tyree Robertson was born about 1738 in Henrico County, Virginia. He was the son of Jeffrey Robertson and Judith Tanner Mills.

The spelling of the name 'Tyree' is variable. Examples include Tyrea, Tyre, Tirey, etc. The surname 'Robertson' is also variable, appearing in records in many versions.

Tyree reportedly married Mary 'Polly' Adams about 1765, probably in Anson County, North Carolina. 'Tirey Robinson' was recorded on a tax list there in 1763. They had several children, many of whom are confirmed by the 1819 Power of Attorney document from Rhea County, Tennessee (see sources).

Children of Tyree and Mary (not in birth order):

  1. Jane, married Nicholas Powell
  2. Elizabeth, married Mr. Kirksey
  3. Jeffrey R.
  4. John
  5. Mills
  6. Nancy, married Henry Taylor
  7. Nathan
  8. Tyree/Tirey, Jr.
  9. Polly, married William K, Kulbeth

Tyree is recorded in a 1782 tax list for Montgomery County, North Carolina in 1782 and he also was the recipient of some land grants there around the same time. That land, about 400 acres on Little and Long Creeks, was located just south of Albemarle in today's Stanly Co. Montgomery Co. formed from Anson Co. in 1779. Stanly Co. did not form until 1841. The family remained there until at least 1790. The census for that year records 'Tyry' with 3 males <16 and 5 females (one presumably his wife) in his household and 1 slave.

Some time before 1808, Tyree apparently moved his family to Tennessee. However, very little is known his life there (See Research Notes).

He probably died in Rhea County, Tennessee shortly before 28 August 1817.

Research Notes

Unfortunately for us, research on Tyree is seriously hampered by multiple courthouse fires. We know he lived in Anson Co., NC where a fire in 1868 destroyed most of the early records. We also know he lived in Montgomery Co., NC, where a fire in 1835 destroyed most early records. And we know he lived in Rhea Co., TN, where fires in 1869 and 1927 destroyed most early records, including all probate records from 1808-1825.

There is an unsourced Find-A-Grave Memorial for Polly Adams Robinson (c1740 - 17 October 1833), reportedly the widow of Tyree Robinson. This memorial, and some associated with it, suggest that John Robinson (son of Tyree) moved to Carroll County, Georgia c. 1828. Tyree's widow may have made the same move and may have died in Carroll Co. in 1833. This information is unconfirmed and needs more research. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/71613628/polly-robinson

Robinson-11255 and Robertson-9664 appear to represent the same person because: Souse, dates, locations, parents the same. Only significant difference is the name. His parents were Robertson, so LNAB is Robertson. later he was also known as Robinson and Roberson. These should be AKA's
