Arthur Robinson was born on 31st August 1850 aboard the "Courier[1]as his parents Robert Robinson and Martha Johnson and five older siblings were emigrating from Yorkshire, England. He arrived in South Australia, Australia in December 1850. He counts as a migrant as he was certainly conceived in England. What a voyage his mother must have endured!

According to his son, Ernest Lincoln, Arthur left school aged 12 to drive bullocks. Later he became a shearer and he used to go up north to shear on the big sheep stations and was also butchering. When he was 25 (1875) he moved to the west coast to work at Lake Hamilton doing a variety of jobs including shearing.

Arthur married Kate Stacey in the Macclesfield Congregational Church on 9th November 1878[2] Arthur was 28 and Kate only 18. They journeyed by boat to Port Lincoln where Arthur purchased bullocks, dray, food clothing and utensils and they set off for Wangaralidnie near Cleve on Eyre Peninsular. They cleared the land by hand using bullocks and setup their home. Arthur’s brother Frank helped. It was a tough life and they worked hard for very little income. They sold up and moved to Lake Hamilton where his brother Frank had bought land and they started over again clearing the land. Arthur later bought land at Poelpene in the Hundred of Tinline and they ran sheep on both properties. Dingoes were a major problem and when the owner of Warna Station up Talia way became concerned he put the property up for sale. Arthur bought it and the family moved again. About 1909, Arthur sold the station and moved to Unley in Adelaide. They owned several properties in the Adelaide area before ultimately settling in St Peters.

They had 12 children:

  • Lillie May (Robinson) Dennison (1879)
  • Robert Oliver Robinson (1881)
  • Frederick Arthur Robinson (1882)
  • Maria Louisa (Robinson) McMorran (1883)
  • Ruth Kate (Kitty) (Robinson) Thomson (1886)
  • Sydney Pearce Robinson (1887)
  • Francis Tinline Robinson (1890)
  • Alfred Horace Robinson (1893)
  • Allen Lindsay Robinson (1895)
  • Henry Walter Robinson (1897)
  • Ernest Lincoln Robinson (1899)
  • Arthur Andrew Robinson ((1904)

Arthur looked after Kate who was partly deaf and suffered from memory loss. She died in 1933 aged 73. Arthur lived to be 91 passing away on 30th November 1941 at his home at Royston Park aged 91[3][4] and he is buried in the Mitcham General Cemetery[5].
