Biography

Ireland Native
Ann (Robinson) Mills was born in Ireland.

Ann was born in 1797. Her maiden Is unknown although it could have been Robinson because she has declared that name as a previous name on her marriage certificate. It could also have been a previous married name although this is yet to be proved.

In 1841 Ann is 45 years old and is living in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England with her husband Joseph Mills, a Fellmonger. Other occupants of the house were her sons Thomas (18), also a Fellmonger, William (6) and her daughters Rebecca (10) and Catherine (2).

in 1851 Ann is 54 years old and living at 8 Langley Gardens, Luton with the Holloway family and Ann's daughter Rebecca Mills aged 19. Ann is shown as a nurse!

In 1861 we find Ann at the age of 64 and living with her husband Joseph Mills at no. 5 Plummers Place, in the parish of Christchurch, Luton, Bedfordshire, England. Joseph is shown as a pauper, formerly Fellmonger having lived originally in Hitchin. Ann is shown as a charwoman, born in Ireland. It seems the couple had fallen on hard times with no pension provision and had taken in a lodger and his daughter, namely Samuel Lines and his daughter Caroline. I could find no such place as Plummers Place in the old maps of Luton, but I know the parish of Christchurch, since I live in Luton myself, and it did cover the area wherein lay the workhouse and several streets surrounding. One of these is Spring Place.

In 1871 Ann appears, at the age of 75, living with her son Richard Mills at 21 Dumfries Street in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. There is no mention of Joseph here. Also living at the same address were Richard's daughters Ann, Martha and Ann and a lodger Eliza Hemmings and her son William.
