Biography

Daughter of William Roberson (from marriage record) and Phoebe Robinson (single) on 14 September 1827 in East Dereham, Norfolk. She was baptised on 14 October 1827 at St. Nicholas church, East Dereham.[1]

Mother of at least 10 children, probably with her listed single employer Charles Tufts, as she is listed as living with him in various capacities on each census, unmarried, and with more children with undocumented fathers. She finally married him on 25 December 1871.

On 26 September 1897, Elizabeth Tuffs (69) was buried at All Saints' church in Shipdham, Norfolk.[2]

Research Notes

The 1851 census shows Elizabeth's age to be about 10 years older than expected. Is the an error in the record, an error in the Ancestry transcription (it wouldn't be the first) or is this the wrong Elizabeth and there was another person with the same name in the same parish?

Although she was baptised under her mother's name (Roberson) she used her father's name (Robinson) for the baptisms of her first 8 illegitimate children, then used Roberson for the baptisms of her next 2 illegitimate children, then returned to Robinson for her marriage.

3rd great grandmother via son Robert.

She was baptised in East Dereham, which became part of the district of Mitford when it was formed in 1837. Although her date of birth is on the baptism record the place of birth is not. It was most likely Dereham, but there is most likely no way to confirm it. References are on the other profile.

Yes and maybe.

Mitford is the district, used on the census and on birth, marriage and death records. Shipdham is a parish within the district of Mitford. From the parish register she was buried in the parish of Shipdham, and from the death record she died in the district of Mitford. She probably died in Shipdham, but I have not yet found any evidence to confirm it.

Mitford is the census region. She passed away in Shipdham.

Robinson-22930 and Robinson-17371 are not ready to be merged because: Do you have a source for her birth location?

Robinson-22930 and Robinson-17371 appear to represent the same person because: I stopped creating her children when I realised there was a match here. I added the rest of the information I have though, in the biography, so that the match can be properly evaluated.

She is my 3rd great grandmother, through her eldest daughter Charlotte. Stephen Thirkettle
