Biography

Note: His middle name is sometimes spelled Levely, sometimes Leavely.

When Robert Levely Robinson was born on February 25, 1796, his father Richard Levely Robinson was 41 and his mother, Elizabeth Morris, was 38. [1] He was christened at age 8 on July 8, 1804[2]

His father Richard was one of six children -

William (Feb 26, 1742)
Annis (Dec 25, 1743)
Martha (May 1749)
Alice (June 1751-Feb 9 1761))
Richard Levely (Oct 1755-Oct 1839)
Jane (?-Sept 1760) infant mortality

He married Alice Dring in Streatham Oct 12, 1820.

Their children were

John (Nov 4, 1821- 1841)
Richard (May 1 1824 - Jan 31 1906)
Alice (1825, infant mortality)

After her decease September 27 1825. he married Ann Hammond on May 2 1830.

Thomas Henry (1837-1910)
Joseph Samuel (1840-1895)
Elizabeth (1842-1930)

John and Ann emigrated to New Zealand on the barque Lady Nugent as New Zealand Company assisted emigrants; arriving in Wellington on 17 March 1841. In the same year, sons John (19) and William (7) died.

Their first New Zealand born child Elizabeth was born in 1842 when the family was living in Karori. Their first house was built from clay, but was later replaced with a timber construction, using timber sawn in a pit.

The family lived in the Hutt Valley, Karori, and Otaki. Her father, Robert Robinson, was in charge of the Maori mission at Otaki under Bishop Williams.

John died at his daughter Elizabeth’s home in Tauherenikau in the Wairarapa near Greytown, on the 17th of January 1884. He was 87 years old. [3]

He is buried in Greytown cemetery, with other members of his family. [4]

The 1991 family history makes it clear that the family arrived in NZ in 1841 not 1840. The later English census records must relate to another Richard Robinson.
