Obituary

William Robinson, Sr., Had Barbecue Shop

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the F.D. Mason Funeral Home for William Robinson, Sr., 85, of 320 1/2 Belmont Avenue, operator of a barbecue shop in the city for more than 35 years.

Mr. Robinson died of a heart ailment Sunday in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center.

He opened his first barbecue shop on Oak Hill Avenue in 1935 and later moved to Belmont Avenue and operated there until his retirement in 1976. He was known to many as "The King of Ribs."

In 1920, before entering the restaurant business, he opened a furniture shop and remained in the business until materials for finishing and upholstering were cut off during World War II.

Mr. Robinson was born May 6, 1897 in Wheeling, West Virginia, a son of Allen and Mary Belle Lipscomb Robinson and came to Youngstown 68 years ago from Connellsville, Pennsylvania.

He was a member of the Third Baptist Church and the NAACP.

He leaves his wife, the former Bertha Johnson, whom he married in 1950; a son, William Jr. of Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Williams of Chicago, Mrs. Myrtle Parkman of Youngstown and Mrs. Delores Jasper of Southfield, Michigan; a brother, George of Youngstown; three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Williams of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Gustava Tankersly and Mrs. Bessie Davis, both of Madison Heights, Michigan; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Mrs. Gloria Crowley, died in 1980.

Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at 1166 Park Hill Drive following the calling hours and the services.
