A Samuel Robinson appeared as a witness to Thomas Sheffield's (b.1791) and Ann Stratton's wedding at St. Mary's in Olney in 1817. While there were at least two Samuel Robinson's in Olney (b. 1762) so it's hard to pintpoint, it is this lineage that intermarries with the Sheffield's in later years, so there may be some possible connection here.

Religion

In 1837, the English non-Anglican churches were required under new civil regulation to provide the vital records of their parishioners. On July 8th 1821, Samuel becomes the church Registrar who in 1837, transcribes the records of the birth's of the many family members who attended the Olney Baptist church in the years prior.

It was indicated that Samuel Robinson led the church choir, and was a member of the church for 41 years. Deacon John William Soul presides over the signing of Samuel as church Registrar. We do not know presently which John William Soul it was, since their were several and no age was recorded.

Poem

Memorial to Samuel Robinson (ca ~1846)

To the Memory of Samuel Robinson
Who departed this life March 8th, 1846 aged Sixty
After he had been an honorable member of the Baptist Church
at Olney, forty-one years.
He's gone from all his sufferings here below;
Which for a long time he had to undergo;
Long on the banks of Jordan did he stand,
Waiting and longing for the promised land:
For he had travelled through the wilderness,
Full forty years to seek that hand of bliss;
At last his spirit was conducted over.
The swelling flood to Canann's happy shore.
Love collected him from fifty years ago,
When blooming youth sat smiling on his brow;
Fresh as the rose and cheerful as the day,
To pass the hours of human life away;
These happy days of youth were quickly gone,
Then riper years and manhood soon came on;
Ah! think what he at last did realize,
For now, behold in yonder grave he lies.
In early life 'twas his delight to raise,
The songs of Zion to our Savior's praise;
And even unto his declining age,
The same employment did his mind engage.
The church to which he did belong with friends
He did with credit his profession show;
For more than forty years they had to prove,
His constancy before he did remove.
But now he will no more with us be seen;
To fill the place where he so long had been;
No more to raise the chorus when we join
To celebrate our Savior's praise divine;
No more meet round the sacramental board,
When commemorate our dying Lord;
For he is gone to feast on living bread,
And drink new wine from that pure fountain head.
Twas on the Sabbath* when he took his flight;
To yonder world of infinite delight;
Flew on the wings of angels through the skies,
of glorious company before his eyes:
Think what rapturous pleasure filled his mind,
His parents, wife and children there to find.
In that bright world where they will ever be,
To praise the lamb through all eternity.
J. Brittain.
