Biography

Mehitable (Rockwell) Hoyt was born in 1661 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut Colony, daughter of John Rockwell (~1625 - ~1673) and Elizabeth (Weed) Rockwell (~1637 - ~1676).

Research Notes

Mehitable Rockwell was usually called Hittabel. She was born c 1661, in Stamford, CT. She was a daughter of John Rockwell, who was called "formerly of Stamford" in Hittabel and John "Keeiler"'s marriage record at Norwalk^[3] and possibly his first wife, Mehitebal? Unknown.^[4]

On 14 September 1656, a "Hittabel Rock" or Rock (?) well died at Stamford. There may have been a mark of contraction following the name. If this were true, she was probably a first wife of John Rockwell. Naming patterns (that John named a daughter Mehittabel) and a gap in the births of John Rockwell's children also point to a possible first wife.^{[citation needed]}
