Parents: A previous version of this profile connected Hugh to parents Hugh Roe and Bond-4671. There are no sources to confirm the relationship and they have been disconnected.
Wife: This profile was connected to a wife named Abigail Stow. There are no sources confirming Stow as either a birth or married surname.
Wives: Frank Roe's book takes the position that Hugh had two wives, with a second marriage to Abigail (surname unknown) in 1654/5.[1] The TAG article indicates all the children could have been born to the same wife.[2]

Biography

Hugh Roe was likely born in England, perhaps around 1617. His place of origin, parents, and birth date are unknown.[1] Hugh emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, perhaps with a wife. Weymouth records indicate he received several land grants beginning in 1655.[3]

Family

Hugh's children were (birth order uncertain):[2]

  • Mary b prob by 1643; m (1) Samuel Dudley (2) Richard Dart
  • Sarah b in or before 1653; m Daniel Warner[4]
  • Esther; d at Weymouth, Mass 11 Jul 1655[5]
  • Samuel; b Weymouth 14 Jan 1655/6;[6] d Suffield 1 Mar 1687/8
  • Abigail b prob by 1660; m Thomas Taylor
  • Peter b prob 1662-64; m Sarah Remington
  • Elizabeth b 1664; m Thomas Merrill

Connecticut

On September 2, 1661, Hugh Roe, Currier (a craftsperson who treats animal skins with oil or grease,) was admitted inhabitant of Hartford.[7] He held several civic positions during his residence there.[8]

The family later moved to Suffield, Massachusetts Bay Colony (now part of Connecticut -- see below). Hugh Roe's purchase of 60 acres was recorded on June 4, 1674 and he was a voter at the first Town meeting.[9] Hugh once again performed civic duties on behalf of the town such as overseeing construction of the church and burial yard.[10]

Death and Estate

Hugh died at Suffield on August 5, 1689; his will is dated the same day and was signed with his mark.[2] It was recorded 30 March 1690 in the Hampshire County Probate Court at Northampton. It names:[11][12]

  • son Peter Roe
  • grandchild John Werner (under 21)
  • wife Abigaile
  • daughters Mary Densloe [sic], Elizabeth Merrell, Abigaile Taylor
  • Thomas Taylor
  • grandchildren Abigaile Kent, Abigaile Werner, Thomas Werner (brother of John)

He named son Peter and grandson John Werner as executors and chose loveing friends & neighbors Abram Dible, Thomas Huxley, and David Wintchall as overseers of the will. Roberts notes that the original will is lost, and the version in the Hampshire Co. probate volumes is stated to be a copy. Robert's goes on to conclude that the surname "Densloe" for daughter Mary was probably an error by the copyist, since she was known to have been married to William Dudley at this time.

Placenames

Weymouth and Suffield were originally part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1692 the former Massachusetts Bay Colony was incorporated into the Province of Massachusetts Bay (after a brief interregnum in which the "Dominion of New England" encompassed a much larger territory). Most of the Province of Massachusetts Bay eventually evolved into the State of Massachusetts. Weymouth is now part of Norfolk County in the state of Massachusetts.[13] Suffield was disputed land between the Province of Massachusetts Bay and the Connecticut Colony, and was ceded to Connecticut in 1749.. Suffield is now known as Suffield, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA. [14]

When researching on any original records, consider these name changes over time. Some of the transcribed or interpreted data uses modern names instead of the event-contemporaneous names. This profile follows the Wikitree guidance for location names. [15]

Rowe-3626 and Roe-148 appear to represent the same person because: Same person.

See p. 3 of the Frank C. Roe book linked at See Roe Family History for commentary on variant Roe spellings. DOD differences possibly attributable to calendar interpretations.
