Biography

Margaret was born about 1565 to Edmund Roe or Rowe of Cheddar and is mentioned in his will dated 1589. She married Sir John Hungerford, son of Edmund Hungerford of North Standen, Hungerford, and grandson of Sir Anthony Hungerford.

Margaret died in 1598 and was buried on 26 June that year at St.Lawrence Hungerford, Berkshire, her residence stated as North Standen.

"To my son in law John Hungerford, Gent (son & heir appt to Edmund Hungerford of North Standen co. Wilts., Esq.), my signet of gold wherein the Roo-brik is graven, which I do usually wear. My daughter Margaret Hungerford. My daughter Frances Lancaster. Residue to Ann Hungerford (daughter of my sd daughter Margt), Exix. My brother in law Edmund Hungerford, and my son in law John Irish of Congresbury, Overseers. My manors of Cheddar & Winford. Other lands in many parishes (named). My village of Batcombe. If I have no issue male, half to my daughter Frances Lancaster & to her son John Lancaster, in default, remt to my younger daughter Margaret Hungerford and Edmund Hungerford, her first born. Remainder to my cousin Thomas Roe, son and heir of Nicholas Roe of Glastonbury, decd., then to Thomas Roe, son and heir of John Roe, late of Walton, Somerset."

Note the possible pun in the will: "roo-brik" may refer to the rubric or design on the ring and also to the fact that the emblem of his house is a roe-buck. [1]

Monuments to this branch of the Hungerford family are in the church of St. Julian at Wellow, Somerset.

"On the south side is a chapel, opening from the aisle by broad, handsome, obtuse arch, with a clustered shaft on one side, and a series of canopied niches on the other. This chapel was originally a chantry, and in its eastern window, ... the arms of Roe, a Roebuck, impaling several others; among which, are those of Bishop Sharpe, and the Cheddar family; against the wall, is the front of the tomb of Edmund Roe, esq. who died in 1595, with the arms of Roe, and three others."
