Uncertain Mother

The identity of Mary's mother is unknown. Frank Roe's book takes the position that Hugh had two wives, with a second marriage to Abigail (surname unknown) in 1654/5.[1] The TAG article indicates all the children could have been born to the same wife.[2]

Biography

Mary was the eldest of the three daughters born to Hugh Roe.[3] They lived for a time in Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, where several of his 7 children were born. Weymouth is now identified as Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA. [4]

The family later moved to Suffield, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Suffield eventually became part of the State of Connecticut. Suffield is now known as Suffield, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA. [5]

On November 4, 1661 Mary Roe married William Dudley at Saybrook in the Connecticut Colony.[6]

The Suffield Historical Society has a webpage dedicated to "Early Families" which contains detailed information regarding the Roe Family's genealogy. Mary Roe's information may be found in Families 1 and 2.[7]

Death and Estate

William Dudley died in 1701; widow Mary remarried to Richard Dart. Her will was dated June 16, 1726 and described her as a "widow and relict." She names daughter Elizabeth Remington, daughter Mehetabell Brainard, sons Joseph and Daniel Dudley, grandson William Dudley, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Dudley Spencer. The estate was settled on May 7, 1728 between Joshua Brainard and Joseph Remington.[8]

I agree that Mary Roe, Esther Row & Sarah Roe descend from the first wife of Hugh Roe. I have removed Abigail as her mother. Thank you.

The Suffield CT Historical Society asserts that Abigail is not the mother of Mary. Rather, Mary's mother's identity is unknown. "Hugh Rowe [Roe] first settled in Weymouth, MA. The name of his first wife is unknown, she died 1653?54. His second wife was Abigail last name unknown, he married her about 1654?5."Suffield Historical Society, Roe Family, Families No. 1 and 2, http://www.suffieldhistoricalsociety.org/families_roe

Roe-151 and Roe-41 appear to represent the same person because: Look to be the same person.
